The STRETCHYBELT® elastic belt
The belt tension is one of the most important functional characteristics in a transmission system. The most frequently used method for guaranteeing a minimum operating tension is to use a tensioner (fixed or automatic). The elastic belt is an innovative, high performance and economical solution pioneered by Hutchinson.

In this system, the elasticity of the belt maintains the right tension without the need to add a tensioner. This technology can be used to make large savings on the cost of the function and its dimensions (elimination of the automatic tensioner) and reductions in the mass of the complete system. It also has a positive impact on vehicle consumption.
The elastic belt also has the capability of absorbing dynamic tension peaks related to acyclism (cyclic irregularities in the engine) and putting accessories such as the alternator, the air-conditioning compressor, etc., into and out of service. It thus reduces vibrations and therefore noise of the system.
There are several possible assembly procedures to adapt to environmental constraints.
The elastic belt integrates a cord with a modulus of elasticity selected to provide the right tension in the operating position. This cord is composed of sophisticated engineering wires, and it ensures that the belt maintains its minimum operating tension throughout its lifetime, regardless of ambient conditions.
The elastic belt technology is also adapted to applications outside automotive, such as household appliances (washing machine belts) and very many industrial applications.
