G-VIR®

A surgical glove provides « active » protection against risks of viral contamination (AIDS, Hepatitis C, etc.)

The development context
With the AIDS and more recently the Hepatitis C pandemic, people have become generally more aware about the risk of viral transmission. The risk in hospital environments or during an emergency operation is often caused by injuries due to sharp cutting material used daily by health personnel. Surgical teams are particularly concerned because they perform very complex operations and safety equipment designed to prevent accidents is insufficient if it exists at all.

In this context, the Hutchinson Group has developed a new surgical glove called the G-VIR®, designed to provide better protection for care personnel.

The innovation
The G-VIR® glove is the result of ten years of research and development and is composed of an innovative ‘sandwich’ material with three layers. The central layer contains a large quantity of disinfectant liquid dispersed in the form of microdroplets. This liquid is inserted industrially using an innovative technology based on an emulsion.

The viscoelastic characteristics of each layer of the glove were adjusted to optimize the restitution of liquid disinfectant on the dirty object if the glove is perforated: due to an innovative and scientifically-demonstrated action method, the disinfectant is delivered to the impact point and expelled instantaneously when the film breaks. Under these conditions, the transmitted quantity of virus (AIDS, Hepatitis C, etc.) is very much reduced and the risk of contamination is very much lower.

The market
Health professionals are regularly exposed to risks, and have enthusiastically accepted this new protection material. The G-VIR® glove is recommended especially for high-risk surgical procedures and released on the French market in the second half of 2004. Since 2006, it is being progressively introduced to international markets.
